Juha Törmälä is a Helsinki-based photographer and artist who photographs people for various purposes, including advertising, marketing and corporate communications. He works out of his Cable Factory studio in Helsinki.

His work is well known for its qualities: Timeless portraits where his subjects project a strong, graceful presence. Juha has held one exhibition, Twelve Men, in 2015 and that same year he was chosen Magazine Photographer of the Year in Edit, a top media industry competition in Finland.

With his background in magazines and journalism, Juha is best known for his portrait work for the top magazines in Finland. Most major publications have featured his images.

Juha became interested in light and portraits at an early age. He attended the Free Art School in Helsinki, before studying photography. During his studies he distinguished himself by doing b&w portraits and becoming specialized in magazine work. After a few years as a newspaper staff photographer Juha set up his own company and has remained an independent photographer to this day. In 2014 he co-founded Quiet, a portrait studio in Helsinki, with his wife, photographer Outi Törmälä.

Juha gives workshops and teaches portraiture regularly. As a fan of American portrait photography he draws inspiration from the work of classic masters such as Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Annie Leibovitz.

During his free time Juha makes drawings and paintings. He is currently working on a landscape series featuring the suburban scenes around Helsinki.
