Juha Törmälä is a Helsinki-based photographer who makes portraits for magazines, books, advertising and corporate communications. He works out of his Cable Factory studio in Helsinki.
He is one of Finland´s top portraitists and he has been widely published. His work is well known for its qualities: Timeless portraits where his subjects project a strong, graceful presence. Juha has held one exhibition, Twelve Men, in 2015 and that same year he was chosen Magazine Photographer of the Year in Edit, a top media industry competition in Finland.
Juha is best known for his work for top magazines in Finland such as HS Kuukausiliite, the monthly supplement of the biggest newsaper in the country and Image, an influential popular culture magazine. Most major publications in Finland have featured his images.
Juha became interested in light and portraits at an early age. At 19 he attended the Free Art School in Helsinki, before enrolling at the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki. During his photography studies he distinguished himself by doing b&w portraits and becoming specialized in magazine work.
In 1998 Juha started working as a staff photographer for Kauppalehti and Kauppalehti Optio, then the biggest business publications in the Nordics. In 2004 he also became a staff photographer for Presso, a critically acclaimed weekly tabloid that won numerous international design and layout awards and featured intense portraits as a signature look.
In 2007 Juha set up his own company and has remained an independent photographer to this day. In 2014 he co-founded Quiet, a portrait studio in Helsinki, with his wife, photographer Outi Törmälä.
Juha is a fan of American portrait photography and draws inspiration from the work of classic masters such as Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Annie Leibovitz.
